This year, the First Festa Major (the Great Annual Festival) in Barcelona is celebrated from January 17 to 26 in the neighborhood of Sant Antoni. In addition to the traditional elements of a Festa Major in Barcelona, such as pasacalle de gigantes (gigants parade), correfocs (fire runs), it also maintains distinctive elements that connect it with the celebration of San Antonio Festivity throughout the country. There will be “the cavalcade dels Tres Tombs” and “the raffle of the piglet”, which was recovered a few years ago. The neighborhood of Sant Antoni owes its name to an old gateway to the walled city, known as the Sant Antoni gateway, which was the main gateway to Barcelona since the Middle Ages. The neighborhood began to be urbanized during the second half of the 19th century, when the wall was demolished, and especially after the construction of the iron market, in 1882. This caused the integration into the Cerdà Plan, that is part of the district of L’Eixample. Nowadays, the Sant Antoni neighborhood is a popular modern neighborhood with lots of bars, restaurants and its famous market.
Sant Antoni Abat is a saint deeply rooted in the Catalan-speaking territories, as evidenced by the multitude of celebrations that are organized everywhere in his honor. In the case of the Sant Antoni neighborhood, the name derives from the old church in the Raval neighborhood, where currently is Sant Antoni Abat Street. It was located next to the medieval wall and the biggest getaway door that was next to it. This promoted the fact that the portal was also known as Sant Antoni and therefore the neighborhood was built.
